Breaking the silence

Note: I wrote this about a week ago but my ‘net connection’s been a bit uncooperative to say the least when it came to uploading files so I’ve only just managed to post this. Coming soon, Wonderwool awesomeness :) .

Oh my goodness. I hadn’t quite realised that it’s been over a month since I last posted. I am a bad little knitting blogger.

Moving on, I had to stress that I have not been sitting on my backside doing nothing since I last wrote. Oh no, in fact I have achieved a couple of things since then. First of all, having driven myself up to London about 3 weeks ago for the spinning meet, this time at Alice‘s flat, I had my very first go at beating Ali’s spinning wheel, Olivia, into submission spinning. The result of which can be seen here:

The roving is shetland from Fyberspates that I co-bought with Ali in February.

As far as we can tell it didn’t come with a colourway name so I’ve been calling it ‘Tequila Sunrise’ as it reminds me of my once-favourite cocktail. The roving’s nice to spin, so long as it’s drafted before hand (because, my goodness, it likes to draft they way that it wants to rather than the way you want it to!!). Having spun to bobbins, I was then taught how to ply (and found that funnily enough I spun finer on the first bobbin but that might have something to do with me spinning onto the second bobbin quite late at night).

I can’t actually remember the yardage to weight, but it was pretty good if I remember correctly. And here’s the pretty yarn in its full, plyed and washed glory:

Aaaaand not only have I been learning new skills with relation to spinning, but I have also been (relatively) busy with my knitting. In fact, I have two new friends to introduce to you:

Say “hello” to my first ever pair of completed socks! I’m proud of them, even if I think I picked up too many stitches on the second one which resulted in a much longer gusset. And the best thing is that they are super-duper warm!

I’m now planning my next two projects: toe-up socks using Hacho from Mirasol and Le Slouch using Artesano Aran.
