Head to Toe

Well, I certainly had many plans for this Bank Holiday but very few of them were fulfilled. Apart from kung fu on Saturday, I’ve been in the mood for a quiet weekend and, more importantly, knitting. Now, this is quite a change from the past few weeks where I haven’t been knitting all that much because I have to be a) in the mood to knit and b) be awake enough not to have an attention span akin to that of a goldfish.

The latter was very important with regard to my most recent WiP which involved Moss Stitch and knowing whether I was knitting or purling at the start of a row. When knitting was done when the brain was off in lala land, the result was a realisation that a horrible mistake was made several rows back and rows were needing to be frogged. I actually can’t remember how many times this happened.

Yesterday, though, my brain was in gear and I was in that state of mind where I wanted to do something creative but not horrendously taxing on the brain. I finished my own Le Slouch (made with Artesano Aran) some time around 3am this morning and was ecstatic that I finally made it.

Now that my head is nice and warm, I’ve now moved onto my next project: a pair of toe up socks with a short row heel using Mirasol Hacho. The magic cast-on took me a while to get my head around and then 6 attempts later I finally got the toe of the sock the way I wanted it.

I reckon I’m somewhere between half and a third of a way to turning the heel (probably the latter amount to be honest), which isn’t bad going for an afternoon’s work. I’m hoping that I’ll twig the short row heel as quickly. I guess we’ll see in a few days.

The Wonderment of Wonderwool

Posted on May 1st, 2008 by

As promised, today’s post is extolling the wonders of Wonderwool! Now, unlike most of the people in my links list, I didn’t manage to get pictures of the signs or the stalls because to be honest I was somewhat overwhelmed by the sheer magnitude of this festival. I mean, I thought the Stitch and Bitch day last November had lots of choice so I was absolutely blown away by Wonderwool.

It was also a lovely day because not only did I get to spend time with Ali and Nick, and Nick’s family, but I also got to see Diane, Neil (Diane’s hubby), Alice, Rhiannon, Andy (Rhiannon’s boyfriend), Grit and Michaela.

There was so much lovely stuff (and many cheerful exhibitors) that at first I didn’t quite know what to do with myself. I managed to restrain from impulse buying, which is good, and went on a few rounds to see all the stores before finally deciding upon my purchases. Not only did I get to see lots of yarn, fibre and finished objects for sale, but I also got to squee at these pretty faces:

Bowmont Sheep
Bowmont Sheep (who seemed to be a bit camera shy as both Ali and I found out).

Once the sheep and alpaca had been suitably admired, it was time to start shopping (after a spot of lunch, that is). Now, I had only been intending on coming back with a skein of yarn and two lots of fibre if truth be told but that pretty much went out of the window when I passed by the Hedgehog Equipment stall and seen the shelves of carders.

After discussing the choices with the lovely gentleman running the stall, I ended up going with a pair of carders for finer wool so that I could work with merino and alpaca. Having stashed my first purchase into my bag, I decided that yarn was off the table due to this unexpected purchase so my next stop was the stalls selling fibre.

I came away from the Scottish Fibres stall a very happy bunny with 100g of turquoise merino and 100g of undyed falkland/merino. I was pretty certain, by that point, that I had bought everything I had wanted when a thought struck me. How on earth was I going to practice playing with my carders if I had nothing to card?!?I eventually decided to buy some alpaca fleece from Alandale Alpacas:

All in all, it was a fantastic day out and I’d definitely do it again. And, as much as I have been going on about yarny goodness, it has to be said that I don’t think a more beautiful area could have been chosen for Wonderwool.

See what I mean?
