I'm having a similar problem - I cannot find a single piece of clothing that suits me! And I look like a butch, east german farmer's wife when I wear a dress. So for now, jeans and hoodies are it. ;)

What about eBay? There are loads of beautiful and quirky clothes on there (and can be cheaper than high street). Oo, or Folksy (British equivalent of Etsy) - lovely handmade clothes and accessories on there. And, if you can't afford a whole new wardrobe you could start with accessories?

In terms of the skinny jeans - you're way slimmer than I am and have slimmer calves and thighs and I've managed to wear skinnies! Shop around - you'll find a pair that fit and suit if you really want some.

I have one thing to say to you... The Coat Of Awesomeness. It may not be your whole wardrobe, but I think it's a good start!

I agree with you on all this. Once I was settled in the idea that I was going to be a gardener/horticulturist/plant geek, I knew how I could see myself, and what I wore needed to reflect that major part of my personality. So it is important, and not childish or selfish at all.

You could make a list of things or materials you like, or collect key words - layers? lace? colours? textures? vintage? retro? sharp? modern? - and from there see what you can find. There are always clothes markets and vintage shops that have loads of great quirky things. I can always do a recce around London for your next visit. :)

Ian: I guess it's all a case of perspective, isn't it. Once you have to do something that forces you to get over socially-cultivated embarrassment you realise how silly it actually is. Or, as you say, perhaps your local pool is a secret nudist hangout :-P

Eric: I find I act differently if other people are obviously doing the contortionist thing too because I don't want them to feel uncomfortable, although I draw the line at putting my knickers and bra on under the towel, then they just have to accept that I'm not going to put my top and trousers on under a wet towel.

Mark: It was disconcerting - only had to do it once because we only made it into the town once (first time the guys and I went to visit someone we knew who was training in a school down the road; he had an ensuite). I got annoyed with the staring after a while and started meeting the eyes of the other women and frowning; about 10 minutes later they were all trying to look everywhere but at me. If it hadn't been a case of such overt scrutiny I probably wouldn't have reacted in quite the same way.

Ali: Ok, but that woman was kinda crossing the line (it's not something I'd think it was acceptable to do). I was really getting at the fact that if you're just drying and changing then often you're concentrating on that so being aware of other people doing the same thing in the communal space shouldn't involve a stare-fest (because, you know, it's not like we haven't seen everything on our own bodies, right?) and therefore shouldn't really be that much of a problem. Sometimes I think people are prudish for the sake of being prudish and because it's the 'British Way' rather than there being a real reason for it.

I still say any discussion about changing room attitudes can be swiftly devolved by quoting this Tweet I once read:

"At at the gym. Fifty-plus woman blowdrying her minge. It looks like Gandalf in a hurricane. Help me."

On topic, tho, my gym has the usual rush-and-crush of people before and after classes, but not very many wet-towel contortionists. Come to think of it, there are alarmingly few cubicles in the women's changing room...

My current gym is very bad for my sense of prudishness. I regularly walk in to people casually chatting away in the nudd, without even making the pretense of changing.

China sounds mightily disconcerting, how long did that take to get used to?

Hear Hear! I always found it distinctly weird, though I'll admit, if I spot another towel contortionist I do the same myself in order to make them feel less odd...
